Agreed, lighter moments are useful. Even subject related anecdotes, now with the Net gathering such are easy. Timing of using these is important.

humour is a very important part and would definitely help in making classes more fun filled however has to be done carefully. I often use it in my classes but it is often well thought out though it may seem spontaneous to the students.
